  2. Policraticus portrayed the church as the
  3. guarantee of liberty against the unjust
  4. claims of secular authority. He studied in
  5. France 1130-1153: at Paris with Abelard and
  6. at Chartres. He became secretary to Thomas a
  7. Becket and supported him against Henry II,
  8. and fled to France after Becket's murder,
  9. becoming bishop of Chartres 1176.
